VBlog 2- Maddison Hadaway

Hi All!      For my ELL interview, I interviewed Francisco. He grew up in a home with Spanish as his primary language, with little to no English up until third grade. His journey began in elementary. His parents came to the United States, to give Francisco and his siblings better opportunities. In VBlog 2, Francisco discusses the activities and techniques used to help him learn English, as well as what he wished the teachers could have done differently to help him succeed.      In the first part of the VBlog, I asked Francisco what kind of activities or lesson plans teachers used for ELL students. He described methods such as matching games, booklets in Spanish and English, and weekly/daily pullouts for English learning. Francisco also mentioned that his teachers and curriculum focused on vocabulary. VBlog 1: Thoughts and Talks Hi All!     Through creating this VBlog, I have learned so much about myself and solidified some ideas I have already considered. While creating the VBlog, I realized how important languages are in order to bring people together, and the impact that teachers and your environment can have on learning a second language. Additionally, I expanded on how I have grown accustomed to being surrounded by a different language that is not my own.      In my VBlog, I said that it seems harder for adults to learn new languages compared to children, though this is not a constant. In the textbook Second Language Acquisition Myths  (Brown & Larson-Hall, n.d.), it is said that "by being exposed to a second language in a naturalistic context, most adults ... become quite fluent ... after 18-24 months".
